Preparing for a White Christmas: Northeast Snow Forecast and Travel Updates
Hi, this is meteorologist Steve Pelletier and I'm the Weatherman. Thanks for checking into theweathermanpodcom on your Friday. It is the 20th day of the month of December, we're getting close to the holiday season and it looks like we're getting close to winter. Winter officially arrives in the east here at 421 am, eastern Standard Time on Saturday morning, and it's going to be wintry. As a matter of fact, much of the northeast will be under the influence of a strong outbreak of cold air. A combination of a low-pressure system offshore and an upper-level low that's swinging down out of the eastern Great Lakes. That combines normally would make a pretty large storm, and that's something that you always have to worry about. But the models are saying well, it's just going to be rain and snow during the daytime, but it's going to be snow at night. There could be maybe one to as much as four inches of snow, depending upon where you are. The heaviest amounts of snow, of course, will be across the Finger Lakes, the Catskills, the Poconos of New England, all the way up to the Adirondacks and even into the Berkshires. However, along the Jersey Shore, still that little bit of an east wind and a very warm temperature will affect surface temperatures for the evening hours, but then eventually that north wind will move in and temperatures will fall to below the freezing mark and they'll be accumulating, as a matter of fact, during the daytime. On Saturday, a good portion from DC up to the Boston area, especially the interior sections, will be under white. As a matter of fact, temperatures will be cold, so there won't be very much melting. So there's a very good chance of a white Christmas this year. As a matter of fact, in the northeast, that is, at least as you look over towards Tuesday, another area of low pressure working its way out of the Great Lakes. It's not very strong, but it looks like it could give us also a period of snow in the Philly, new York and Boston area on Tuesday, christmas Eve and Christmas night, but more in the daytime. It looks like it warms up on Christmas Day Wednesday with the possibility of some rain, but that's next week In the middle of the week. We'll be covering that as we get through the weekend. In the meantime, the big thing is we're getting into winter, winter solstice occurring at 421 am on Saturday morning and rain and snow for the northeast corner today. It looks like snow tonight in many communities. It'll be white in the morning hours on Saturday and then sharply colder as we head into Saturday night and Sunday. Sunday's highs only in the 20s low 30s. On Monday the cold weather continues right in through early next week. So get set for some wintry weather Now.
Speaker 1:If you're traveling on this Friday it's going to be kind of tough, maybe to the west and northwest, say into Cleveland, dayton, maybe even up into the Buffalo area, because they're going to be getting the snow earlier. Eventually that will be getting into the New York area and that causes icing in the lower level. So there will be delays getting into Philly, new York, laguardia, jfk and also up into the Boston area during the evening hours on Friday. So if planes have a tough time or are delayed coming in, you're going to have delays going out. So you have to expect for that on Friday evening.
Speaker 1:I know it's a big travel weekend coming up. So down in Atlanta looks like the weather will be good there. No problems there if you're making your connections in Atlanta. Orange, charlotte doesn't look like major problems there, but they will have some snow showers. It looks like maybe some snow showers in Chicago, but nothing major. Minneapolis, st Paul will be dry, but bitter cold. I'm talking really cold only in the single digits, and even then some, as a matter of fact, cold weather goes out into central Texas. Dallas-fort Worth will be colder but dry. Dry in Houston as well. West Coast showing just lots of clouds in LA but possibility of some drizzle, fog and showers in San Francisco and rainy weather up in Seattle on Friday afternoon. I've been your host, steve Pelletier, and I'm the weatherman. Hope you have a great Friday. We'll talk to you first thing on Saturday, on that first day of winter. Take care.
