Northeast Rain Patterns & Cross-Country Flight Conditions

Stephen Pellettiere
Speaker 1:

Hi, this is meteorologist Steve Pelletieri and I am the Weatherman. Thanks for checking in to theweathermanpodcom on your Wednesday, 14th day of the month of May and we're quickly coming to the middle of the month and so far our temperatures have been pretty close to normal in the northeast. Pretty close to normal especially because of this one storm that looks like it's going to be hanging around right up through Thursday and Friday. Hanging around right up through Thursday and Friday, and then a lot of rain across Montana, sections of Idaho into Wyoming, the Dakotas, even sections of Nebraska and Kansas. We really need the rain this time of year as the crops are just beginning and well, we're looking at maybe some clearing as we head into the latter portion of this weekend. But for the northeast corridor first, this is DC up to the Boston area, centered around New York City and northern New Jersey, right where we're located. We're looking at an overcast day and rainy on Wednesday. Probably between a half and three-quarters of an inch of rain is a possibility, as temperatures will only range in the 60s because of an east wind. The area of low pressure is going to be right over Washington DC by the later afternoon and early evening hours. That means clouds and rain in IFR conditions for the northeast Continuing right in through Thursday. By Friday still some cloud cover. The storm gradually moves offshore but it's a slow drift. Then we get into some decent weather, possibly by the second half of the weekend and early next week. But, as mentioned, it will be wet and rainy from DC to Boston on Wednesday and Thursday, probably even Friday as well, although a clearing trend from the southwest is likely.

If you're flying today looking at good weather in Atlanta but rainy conditions in Charlotte, so there could be some delays there. Of course delays in the New York area just one or two hour delays, probably a good average. You know JFK always does a good job because they have so many runways there and they always have the lighter amounts of any delays. But LaGuardia, of course, with just two runways and no parallels and Newark with just one set of parallels, the 422 parallels they're able to land and take off pretty quickly there. But when they have to go around to runway 29 at Newark, that's when slow down and they keep that to a minimum most of the time just using that northeast-southwest runway at Newark International. Of course they're also having their equipment problems and their management and labor problems at the FAA, so hopefully that will be straightened out as well.

Looking at good weather down in Florida, central and south Florida no problems there. In Houston, dallas-fort Worth dry. Dry in Chicago, maybe some showers in Minneapolis, st Paul, but nothing much. As mentioned, rainy across the Dakotas and Montana, sections of Wyoming and even Colorado, and out on the West Coast, dry from San Diego up to LA. San Francisco, some early clouds and fog but giving away the sunshine, and then we got cloud cover, maybe some drizzle in Portland and Seattle on Wednesday. I'm Steve Pelletier and I'm the weatherman. Hope you have a great day.
