From Deluge to Sunshine: The Changing Skies of Mid-May
Hi, this is meteorologist Steve Pelletieri and I am the weatherman. Thanks for checking into theweathermanpodcom On your Thursday. It is the 15th day, the midpoint the 15th day of the month of May. Well, it's been wet weather across the Northeast over the last couple of days, actually since Tuesday, and on Monday we had a little bit of light rain, but it's been gradually building to a climax and that happened yesterday, with many places between 1 and 3 inches of rainfall. There was even flood advisories in much of Maryland and sections of Delmarva and over into West Virginia as well. Even central and northern portions of New Jersey had between 2 and 3 inches of rainfall, causing some isolated flash flooding and highway and street flooding in those places. That was during the daytime yesterday.
Speaker 0:Now, from DC up to the Boston area today, little change in the pattern. The low pressure causing it all is an upper-level system that usually meander. Surface systems move quickly, but the upper-level systems, when they get what we call cut off, they sort of almost spin like a top over a particular area and then either eventually move offshore or die out or change or lift up to the north. It's just one of those situations that usually happens in April. Here it is happening in the month of May. So showers and thunderstorms, but warmer conditions tomorrow as a warm front will move through Highs today in the 70s, low to mid-70s in most places from DC to Boston, and again with rain, and it looks like mostly that rain is in the form of showers during the afternoon hours, not the continuous heaviest rain that we had on Wednesday. On Friday's weather it looks like we're going to have more of the same but possibly heavier thunderstorms. Temperatures will be warming up. New York City can get up to about 81, 82, 80 to 85 down in DC and Baltimore. So we're looking at some warmer conditions and that could fire up some really heavy thunderstorms later on Friday. But a strong frontal system expected to move down out of the Great Lakes, currently causing a lot of rain across the Dakotas, montana and Wyoming, will head into the east and that will give us heavy thunderstorms on Saturday when the upper level system finally moves offshore. And then we're getting to some nice weather Sunday, monday and Tuesday of next week across the northeast.
Speaker 0:If you're flying today, of course, an average of about two-hour delays in Newark because of not only weather but also because of equipment and personnel. Also looking at light departure and arrival delays at JFK A little bit more extensive, of course, in LaGuardia and Boston and Baltimore and Philly, although Philly usually does a pretty good job with this type of weather situation. We're also looking at DC and Dulles. They're also going to have some scattered showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon hours. Dry weather in Atlanta. Also a few showers in Charlotte, but an improving trend there, and warm Warm in Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth, although there could be some later-day thunderstorms there. Dry conditions in Chicago, with some showers moving into Minneapolis-St Paul. Dry conditions most of California Rain in the Pacific Northwest. As per usual. I'm Indy Malgis, steve Pelletier and I am the weatherman. Hope you have a great day today, on your Thursday midway through the month. Hope you get to enjoy a nice second half of May. Take care, see you tomorrow.
