Heatwave Alert
Hi, this is meteorologist Steve Pelletierian. I am the weatherman, and thanks for checking into theweathermanpodcom on your Sunday. It is the 22nd day of the month of June and we are deep in the heat Boy. Summer started on Friday evening, the official start of summertime, at least the summer solstice. Actually, we meteorologically look at the first of June as being the beginning of summer and up until this weekend the temperatures really weren't that bad, but about maybe a degree to about a half a degree below normal, above normal rainfall. Of course we've had some pretty lousy weather. But now it's turned and we're going to have four days of excessive heat in the mid-Atlantic and northeast. I know a lot of the nation's midsection has been having the heat over the last several days, but it's just arriving in the east and we are going to pay. So it's called an extreme heat warning in effect from today right up through Wednesday evening at 8 pm. We are going to have sunny and hot weather.
Speaker 1:Today Highs near 100 in DC, baltimore, philly, new York, even up in the Boston area it'll reach up to around 94, 95 degrees. Interior spots in upper New York State probably not as bad. Central and western Pennsylvania also in the 90s, but not close to 100. It's going to be 102 for a high in the major cities on Monday and Tuesday. But the heat index values, which is a combination of the heat and humidity and the sunshine, up to about 108 to 115. That's really tough. Take it slow and easy. Make sure you're well hydrated Now I'm talking about hydrated with water or juices. You don't want alcohol. Just, you're going to cause the heat to go way on up there. So none of that. But you are looking at very dangerous conditions if you're out of noise and exerting yourself. So just find safety cooling places. There probably will be in some of the major cities, places where you can go to escape from the heat. And take advantage of every one of those places, because it will be quite tough. So again, sunny and hot on Monday about 102. Heat index values 105 to 110. The same for Tuesday, the same for Wednesday. Thursday, thunderstorms will be moving in and high temperatures 88. And those thunderstorms will be the leading edge of cooler air that should arrive for next weekend as we get into the end of the month of June.
Speaker 1:Last weekend of the month of June, now, if you are traveling on this Sunday, of course, much of the nation's midsection to the eastern seaboard under the heat and humidity, scattered thunderstorms, mainly at the coast of Florida and extending down from the Keys up to Fort Myers, up to Tampa, st Pete and even out to Pensacola and Tallahassee, and there will be some scattered showers and thunderstorms in Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth, but nothing major, nothing severe weather. The severe weather is looking at west Texas, from El Paso northward up to Amarillo, and also some heavy weather across central Utah, but it looks like in Atlanta it should be dry. Dry but hot in the Louisville area, excuse me, louisville, kentucky and the Nashville area, chicago looking dry also Minneapolis, st Paul the possibility of some showers, but also dry and hot. And out on the West Coast, dry in LA, san Diego and San Francisco and still raining up around Portland and Seattle. Looks like that will continue for the next couple of days there as well.
Speaker 1:I'm your moderator, steve Pelletier, and I'm the weatherman. Hope you have a great day today. Talk to you first thing on Monday. Take care, keep cool, don't exert yourself, drink.
