Summertime Storms

Hi, this is meteorologist Steve Pelletier and I am the weatherman. Thanks for checking in to theweathermanpodcom on your Tuesday. It's the first day of the month of July 2025 and well, we're into. Summertime continues, as we do have that frontal system approaching the eastern seaboard and it's going to be causing some scattered showers and thunderstorms. We had scattered showers and thunderstorms during the daytime on Monday, but they were widely scattered and mostly during the afternoon. These are what we call air mass thunderstorms. They're associated with instability in the atmosphere and the strong late June, early July sunshine heating up the ground, the ground, any moisture that's on the ground from previous storms or moisture that's easily readily available from lakes and rivers and, of course, the along the coast, the oceans. It causes evaporation and evaporation goes into the atmosphere. It rises because it's into a warmer air and, as it gets a little bit higher, a little bit colder or unstable air often causes the storms to form very quickly and then die out just as quickly as they occur. These are called air mass thunderstorms. Now, during during the daytime on Tuesday, in the afternoon and evening, a frontal system will be arriving. These storms are not air mass. They're associated with the cold front and as the cooler air, cooler, drier air relatively starts to work its way into a warm, moist situation, it causes rising motion over that dome of relatively cooler air as it arrives in the east. As it rises, of course, that rising motion causes thunderstorms and those thunderstorms, again forming in lines and sometimes clusters along the frontal system, will move on through the area. We're going to see this several times as we get through the month of July and into the month of August, especially as the frontal systems start to get a little bit more active out of the Great Lakes and of southern Canada, the high pressure moving in just in time for the upcoming holiday weekend.

It looks like later Wednesday, thursday, friday, the 4th of July and even Saturday and Sunday it's going to be quite nice With temperatures generally in the 80s, of course near 90 in the cities, but with moderate relative humid humidity starting to build towards a little bit more haze and humidity towards the early portion of next week, and then we'll be dealing with the possibility of another series of frontal systems moving through at that point. But for your Tuesday in the northeast corner, look for a good deal of sunshine, but also those afternoon and evening thunderstorms with the frontal system arriving and high temperatures for the day, ranging in the upper 80s and lower 90s. So it depends on how much cloud cover we do get. We'll get into the showers ending tonight and then a clearing trend overnight, although partly sunny during the daytime. On Wednesday there could be an afternoon thundershower with a secondary front moving through, but it doesn't look like as heavy. But again that could change. So we'll be watching that in tomorrow's report. And as we get towards Thursday and Friday, high pressure starts to build in drier air, more stable air. That means some great conditions for our region, expected to continue for this upcoming 4th of July weekend. So hopefully we'll be getting into some nice weather then.

In the meantime, if you are traveling today, there will be some delays in the New York and Boston area because of the approaching frontal system. Especially later in the afternoon and at night there could be some locally severe storms associated with that front. So that will slow things down significantly and we're also looking at that possibility in Philadelphia, baltimore and DC as well. So it's all going to be on sort of like a line moving from the northwest to the east, southeast Down in Atlanta. It looks like more rainy weather there, more rain in the Chicago area Actually not Chicago in Charlotte area, with the possibility of that frontal system arriving, chicago's looking great. It's going to be high-pressure building into there with sunshine, temperatures in the 80s. Minneapolis, st Paul also going to be very good, with sunshine and temperatures in the 80s.

Today Houston starts off with fog and haze, gives and temperatures in the 80s. Today Houston starts off with fog and haze, gives way to hazy, sunshine and hot weather. More hot weather in Dallas-Fort Worth. Most of the storms will be over the western portion of Texas, over New Mexico and section of the monsoons across four corners and into central and northern Arizona. West Coast. Dry weather in San Diego and LA, but looks like some showers moving into San Francisco. Some leftover showers in Portland, but it looks like a clearing trend expected for Seattle-Tacoma during the latter portion of the day on Tuesday and Tuesday night. I'm your moderator, steve Pelletier, and I'm the weatherman. Hope you have a great day today. We'll have those thunderstorms That'll bring in some nicer weather. Maybe another round of some showers tomorrow, but less likely as we get later in the day tomorrow. And it looks like great weather for Thursday and the 4th of July, friday and the weekend as well. Plan accordingly. Talk to you first thing tomorrow. Take care, I'm Steve Pelletier.
