The Delaware River's 70th Flood Anniversary Meets Today's Forecast

Stephen Pellettiere
Speaker 1:

Hi, this is meteorologist Steve Pelletierian. I am the weatherman. Thanks for checking into theweathermanpodcom On your Monday. It's the 11th day of the month of August 2025. And it looks like the weather situation is starting to really heat up along the eastern seaboard, at least north of Richmond. We have a lot of showers and thunderstorms in an area of moisture that's been across the Carolinas for the past couple of days, and also scattered showers and thunderstorms across Georgia, central and southern Florida and extending along the Gulf Coast. But in the northeast it's going to be very warm weather as we get into the dark days of summer and are starting to get close to the middle of the month. High temperatures this week will be ranging into the 90s 90 to 95. Humidity values now too bad. At this point, however, because of that strong southwest wind, we're not getting that heat and humidity coming up from the Gulf Coast. But eventually that should start to work into our weather situation and possibly give us some widely scattered thunderstorms by later on this week.

Speaker 1:

Well, earlier last couple of months we've been giving you some articles from Jeff Morrison, a good friend of weathermanpodcom. Jeff has always been interested in the weather since he's been a small kid and he's been collecting New Jersey weather data for 50 years and has been providing local observations to us at Eye on Weather since 1979. Jeff has been a longtime friend and member of the North Jersey Weather Observers, the NJWO, along with being a local Coqueras Community Color Amputee Rain and Hail Snow Network that's called Coqueras and is an observer in Somerset County providing valuable precipitation data to this nationwide network. Jeff has a full weather station at his home and enjoys writing articles on a variety of weather topics for the general audience, and this month's weather article has a lot to do with a big anniversary.

Speaker 1:

August marks the 70th anniversary of the historic flooding along the Delaware River in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and that happened in 1955. Now we've been hearing about all the floods in Texas and we'll be talking about that, but right now just a little bit of a focus on the 70th anniversary the 70th anniversary of this historic flooding along Delaware River in New Jersey and Pennsylvania in 1955. The Delaware River rose to a level never before seen after Hurricane Connie and Diane drenched the region with record rainfall just days apart I think on this Monday it was Hurricane Connie, and then Diane occurred a little bit later on Both Phillipsburg, new Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania, located just across from each other over the Delaware River, were in the epicenter of this flooding, and we'll have more information about this historic 70th anniversary historic flooding around the Delaware River over the days to come this week, as this is the anniversary week of that flooding as well. So make sure that you tune in to the Weatherman Podcast every day this week. We'll have more information about that and also some context to the flooding that happened in Texas as well. So maybe we can sort of like compare and just look at that situation as well.

Speaker 1:

If you're traveling on this Monday, it still looks like the showers and thunderstorms across western North Carolina, charlotte, south Carolina and Georgia also going to have scattered showers and thunderstorms Could be some delays into there, some delays into the Chicago area. That's because of frontal system, a very slow mover just off to the west of there that extends all the way down to west Texas. Dallas is going to be dry and hot. Houston could have some thunderstorms. Also showers and thunderstorms down in South Florida as well. New York area just hazy and very warm. So some minimal delays because of the weather. There will be other delays, but not because of the weather across the New York and Boston area. Even down to DC. West Coast shows very smoky conditions because of the wildfires across Southern California. Generally dry conditions there, but the visibilities and conditions are lower so there could be some delays going into the West Coast in San Diego and both Los Angeles, san Francisco at this point looking dry, dry weather, also up in Portland and in Seattle.
