When Parallel Runways Meet Crosswinds: Weather’s Hidden Travel Tax

Stephen Pellettiere
SPEAKER_00:

Hi, this has been your Steve Pelletier, and I am the Weatherman. Thanks for checking into the Weathermanpod.com on your Monday, 29th day, the month of December, 2025. The month of December, weatherwise, at least from about uh central Virginia northward all the way into New England. We're going to be averaging between four and eight degrees below normal. And snowfall amounts are above normal too, especially across the Hudson Valley of New York into central and southern New England. And even in sections of central and northern New Jersey, northeastern Pennsylvania, you are going to have temperatures and conditions that are a little bit below normal, temperature-wise, above normal snowfall. That's because of the snows that we received during the overnight and during the weekend. Well, actually, it was just a little bit of freezing rain during the overnight hours. There was some snow up further north, north of Albany, into central and southern New England, but that's all moving east now. A warm front going through is going to cause temperatures a jump into the 50s. So any snow that we have is going to be a lot of melting on Monday. But then a solid freeze for later in the day and at night. A wind advisory in effect for the afternoon on Monday. Early high temperatures in the upper 40s to near 50, dropping back into the 30s and 20s by later in the day and at night. On Tuesday, look for just a partly sunny day, a high of about 33 ditto for Wednesday, sunshine, low 30s. And there could be some snow showers, a windy and cold with another frontal system moving through on the first day of the new year on this Thursday. Now, if you're traveling by air today into the New York area, because we have a wind advisory during the afternoon and evening, there is going to be uh quite a bit of delays because everything has to go a lot slower using the specific runways that uh aren't parallel, which means you have to do a one at a time landing, one taking off, instead of just doing a landing and take off at the same time. That's what the uh purpose of parallel runways are. You have loads of parallel runways at JFK, one parallel. That's a 422 at Newark, but at LaGuardia, it's just two runways, and they sort of like switch off on both. And uh either way, it just makes it tougher when you have those strong winds. There will be a lot of turbulence and uh some delays getting into the New York area. Also, some delays up into the Boston area with that front going through. There could be a little bit of icing there. Uh, down across into the Carolinas, we are expecting uh the showers to move offshore, and high pressure will build in. So looks like improving weather in the uh Charlotte area for later today and tonight also improving into Atlanta as the cold front is going through there as well. In the Chicago area, the weather's improving, but still very strong winds and very cold conditions, and most of the snow showers and squalls have moved east. Uh snow showers and squalls in Detroit, also Cleveland and Toledo, so you'll have delays into there. Uh out on the West Coast, still dry weather, finally for San Diego, LA, San Francisco, all the way up to Portland and Seattle. Gulf Coast also looking pretty good. Houston and Dallas Fort Worth, no problems weather wise in those places. I've been your model Just Steve Pelletier, and I am the weatherman. Hope you have a great day on this Monday. Talk to your first thing tomorrow. See you then.
