Why A Colder December Points To A Bigger Winter
Hi, this is Midi Ralder Steve Pelletier, and I am the Weatherman. Thanks for checking into theweathermanpod.com on your Wednesday. It's the last day of December, the last day of 2025. A year that's uh giving us just a little bit of everything weather-wise. I think pretty active uh January, February, and March of last year. Not great, not a tremendous amount of snow or ice. But uh so far this month of December in the Northeast, and say like New York City and northern New Jersey, southeastern Connecticut and New York State, uh, the amounts of snowfall uh that have fallen so far range between eight uh to about 20 inches, about eight, ten inches in the New York City area of Long Island, a little bit more in some places. Uh but if you go upstate into New York and into western sections of Massachusetts, uh not the hills of western Connecticut and even into southern Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, you're looking at uh snowfall rates that are pretty high, and look like they are forecasting that it's going to be even more than the last several years. They add up the maybe the amount of snow that received in 22, 23, and 24. We'll probably get a little bit more than a total of all that. But then again, you have to think and keep in mind that those years we really didn't have that very much snowfall. Uh, there was one year, about three years ago, uh, where the New York, New York area had a record low amount of snow of about maybe five inches. And uh, of course, we're gonna be significantly higher than that. Well, already significantly higher than that. Big thing, the big tell about this upcoming season is the average temperature. The average temperature in December 2025, central, northern New Jersey, New York, New York City, and Long Island, Eastern Pennsylvania, Philadelphia are averaging about five to six degrees below normal. It has not been that cold in December since 2010. Actually, our temperatures have not been below normal in the month of December since about uh seven years ago, seven seasons ago, uh bringing us back to about 2018. But if you go back to 2010, the winter of 2010-2011, we had a similar amount of cold air in the northeast. Average temperatures were in about the middle 30s. That season at Norwork, we had between 55 and 65 inches of snow in the year or the season, the winter season of 2010-2011. So we're very similar to that year so far. We're going to get that much snow. Really don't know. We already have about eight inches in the books so far for the month of December. If we have normal amounts of snow in January, February, and March for, say, like Nork or New York City, you're looking at maybe another 20 inches or 15 or 20 inches. That's just if you have the normal amount. But let's say we have one storm that you have just about that much. The amounts could be significant. So it's going to be one of those winters for the books. And uh, well, the cold air looks like it will continue into early January. Forecast for today, calling for partial sunshine for the last day of the month. Mid-30s, some snow, likely overnight tonight to start off the new month of January, a new year of 2026. Maybe a little coating to generally less than an inch on a New Year's Day as temperatures tomorrow on New Year's Day will range up to about the middle to upper 20s and near 30 degrees. So cold weather continues. Friday is looking sunny and cold, 31, 33, 30 to 35 on Saturday and both Sunday. As mentioned, the cold weather will continue into early next week and maybe even some snow showers on Monday as well. And it'll go a little bit long today, but uh if you are traveling by air today or even traveling by car on this last day of the year, we do see quite a bit of snowfall across the Great Lakes. We're looking at uh central and northern, and even the UP of Michigan having uh between five and fifteen inches of snow. Chicago also going to have snow, northern Indiana, northern Illinois, northwestern Ohio, and even western New York State, and that will be moving in, but to a lighter amount into the Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore, and Boston area uh on the first day of the new year. Uh no problems traveling into Atlanta, Charlotte, South Florida, no problem. Houston and Dallas all looking pretty good. And out on the West Coast, rain moving back into Southern California, San Diego, LA, and San Francisco, all with rain, but at this point it's going to be dry for the daytime today up in Portland and Seattle. But does look like uh delays going into Chicago and very cold weather into Minneapolis, St. Paul. So keep that in mind. Probably delays or cancellations going into Chicago today. I'm your model, Steve Pelletrian. I am the weatherman. Hope you have a great day today. Happy New Year, everyone. We'll talk to you first thing in the other new year on Thursday morning. Talk to you that's yeah.
